How many roads must a man walk down before he realises it's ok to use the bus? I mean you can really beat yourself up about things that really don't make much difference in the end. Indeed, whatever your path through life and whatever choices you make, you really have little or no control. We just like to think we do because life feels safer that way. I mean...you could make the all important decision to always put the first sock on your right foot. This would obviously give the right start to your day, setting the tone as were. The trouble is that once you do it you can't be sure how awful things might have been if you had thoughtlessly gone the other way. In addition you then set a pattern for the next day and the next, creating a spectre so awful that you must never make the mistake of putting the wrong sock on the right foot. So what seemed like the right way to go in the first place was actually a grave error that left you with a lifetimes obsession with socks.
Please note that the author intends no malice towards socks and is not in anyway prejudiced for or against them. They were merely an arbitrary choice of item and many substitutes may be used should you be brave enough to try this at home (people under 16 should check with an adult first).
